Calcium Carbonate Supplier South Africa | Agricultural Lime Grade

What Is Calcium Carbonate?

Calcium Carbonate (CaCO₃) is the primary component of agricultural lime and is widely used to raise soil pH in acidic soils. It contains 38–40% calcium and dissolves slowly in soil moisture over weeks to months, providing a long-lasting liming effect. Fine-ground calcium carbonate (agricultural lime or calcitic lime) is the most cost-effective product for pH correction on large arable areas, while purer or more finely ground grades are used in fertilizer blending and industrial applications.

Calcium Carbonate in Agriculture

Correcting soil acidity with calcium carbonate is one of the most fundamental soil management practices in South African agriculture. Acid soils limit root growth, reduce nutrient availability, and increase the toxicity of aluminium and manganese. Regular lime applications maintain pH in the 5.5–6.5 range preferred by most crops. Calcium carbonate also supplies calcium directly to the soil solution, which is important for root tip health, cell wall integrity, and resistance to diseases such as blossom end rot and tip burn in leafy crops.
